- Environmental sustainability
Zhongzhe Shen is a second-year Ph.D. student in the Landscape Architecture department at Virginia Tech. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture at Iowa State University and Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture at Nanjing Forestry University, China. He has working experience in China and the U.S.; he is a former landscape designer and associate in prior landscape architecture companies. His academic and professional experiences inspired him to pursue his research and the Ph.D. degree.
His research focuses on improving landscape performance measurement with smart devices involved. He published and presented his research at the international conference on robotics in landscape architecture. He is currently working on exploring the feasibility of using smart devices/sensors to collect longitudinal air quality data to improve landscape performance.
By looking at the combination of smart devices/sensors with landscape performance research, his work helps provide an alternative approach to improve landscape performance measurement. Furthermore, his work demonstrates the possibility of the landscape architecture discipline can have its own high-quality landscape performance data.
