The successful candidate should have a degree in planning or landscape architecture with a focus on urban design, entitlement, and mixed-use environments. They must likewise must have the ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate with other disciplines both within and outside of the organization.

Requirements:

  • Education in and experience with urban design and mixed-use environments
  • Familiarity with regulatory codes and entitlement processes

This may include design research and sketches, CAD work, model making, developing presentations, and construction administration. The intern architect will work under the direct supervision of the project architect, and will often interact with Studio Laan principals.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Professional degree in architecture
  • 2 years of relevant professional experience

Summer Urban Design Intern

The DC Office of Planning seeks a full-time paid summer urban design intern. The intern will be responsible for the development of one focus project as well as general job tasks on a variety of urban design based projects including but not limited to: field surveys and photography of existing site conditions, survey and analysis of public space performance, model building, production of renderings and presentation drawings, production of written reports and presentations, and research of case studies and best practices.

This summer’s focus project will be a Corridor Urban Design Study. The Corridor Urban Design Study will analyze the potential for urbanizing and redeveloping public and private lands around a key corridor in the District of Columbia into a dynamic 21st Century mixed-use neighborhood that can support new housing, open space, and public facilities. A key focus of the study will be creating building and development scenarios and a street network to reconnect surrounding neighborhoods.
