We are seeking a part-time, contracted project architect with more than five years of related experience to join our high-energy, growing custom residential firm. Residential architects wear many different hats, and we’re looking for someone who enjoys wearing all of them, with a particular focus on construction documents at this time. The project architect will also support the team with pre-design, schematic design, construction administration, and colleague engagement. The candidate must care deeply about design, enjoy helping people remake their homes, and possess the following requirements:

  • Competency in hand-drawing, sketching, and lettering
  • Extensive experience with AutoCAD and Sketchup
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of residential construction and local building codes
  • Ability to work independently on construction documents
  • Ability to coordinate with consultants and building department officials
  • Experience with the full project life cycle
  • Relevant degree in architecture, with professional licensure preferred

Most work will be conducted virtually, with potential for some safely-distanced onsite project work. This is a contract role; pay is hourly and commensurate with experience. This paid Research Internship offers compensation of $5,000 to graduate students to work on their area of research along with the opportunity to work on real projects. Research topics include AR/VR, 3D modelling, and 3D printing; workplace collaboration; sustainability and resilience; affordable housing; and disaster planning/post-Coronavirus design. The internship occurs over a ten-week period and due to the Coronavirus impact, we expect that the work will be done online. Research Interns are expected to spend 50% of their time on research, the other 50% on office projects that align as closely as possible to this research. The work of the internship is considered a Work Product of the company and all rights will be held by the company. However, the company will credit the researcher appropriately if the work is published.

Campus ADA Accessibility Architect

The Campus ADA Accessibility Architect will be responsible for reviewing all design plans for compliance with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design and the ADAAG. This includes reviewing all building plans for adherence to the ADA standards and the ADAAG in alterations, renovations, capital construction plans, and non-capital construction plans for the university. This position requires an advanced degree in architecture or equivalent experience, as well as experience applying the ADA 2010 Standards for Accessible Design in professional practice. In addition, the candidate must be a registered architect, or able to register as a professional architect in the Commonwealth of Virginia within 12 months of employment.
