Seeing The Light: Grundy, Va. Rock Wall

 

THE SMALL APPALACHIAN town of Grundy, Va., approached Virginia Tech in 2006 seeking creative ideas for addressing a large, unsightly rock wall that was created when a level building site was cut from the side of a mountain in the community. The building site was needed in order to rebuild a portion of the downtown outside of the existing floodplain. The Land Design and Simulation Lab in the Landscape Architecture Program, School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech, undertook the project and developed a plan to use lasers and lights in order to transform the eyesore into a visually appealing town asset. This pro-bono effort was completed by graduate student, Hooman Koliji, and Patrick A. Miller, faculty member in the Landscape Architecture Program.
