About the House:
The ‘05 Solar House was Virginia Tech’s entry into the Department of Energy’s 2005 Solar Decathlon Competition. The house received multiple awards including first place in Architecture, Interior Design, and Lighting Design. The design was also recognized with a Virginia Society AIA Design Honor Award and The President’s Award, a special recognition from the president of the National AIA for excellence in design and sustainability. The house has been recognized in multiple media outlets including Architecture Magazine, Dwell Magazine, Popular Mechanics, ESPN, and PBS’s This Old House. For the past seven years, the net-zero energy house has resided at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond as a special exhibit on renewable energy.
