Second-year Industrial Design students, along with faculty members Mitzi Vernon, Akshay Sharma, and Martha Sullivan, designed and produced inFORM, an exhibition of their form studies, and presented it at the international conference Making – an international conference on Materiality and Knowledge, organized by the Nordic research network, NordFo, and held in Notodden, Norway in September 2012.
Three students attended the conference and helped install the exhibit: Hannah Minnix, Tomon Sasaki, and Scott Shumaker.
Sharma and Sullivan also presented a paper at the conference, “Form Studio: Generating a Language and Making Form,” written by Vernon, Sharma, and Sullivan.
A variation of the exhibition, funded in part through a grant from the Center for Instructional Development & Educational Research (CIDER), was previously displayed at the Virginia Tech Research Center — Arlington and in the Lobby of Cowgill Hall.
As a result of the Making conference, Sullivan and Vernon had a paper accepted for publication, Summer 2013 by the online journal, Studies in Material Thinking. The paper, “Form to Product: Making as Pedagogy,” features multiple student projects and commentaries.
