Robert Frank Graeff, a passionate and effervescent teacher of industrial design, left us on December 9, 2012 after a long struggle with ALS. Son of well-known artist and designer Werner Graeff, Robert was an excellent designer in his own right. Educated at the Ulm School of Design, Robert taught product design at the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in the years 1973 through 1977. From 1978 onward Robert taught in the architecture and industrial design programs at Virginia Tech. After more than twenty years at Virginia Tech, Robert retired from teaching as Associate Professor Emeritus. He leaves behind his loving wife Helen and son Reza who reside in the Chicago area. Those that studied with Robert will remember his flamboyant expressive manner when pushing us onward to be better problem solvers and refine the smallest of details. May our fond memories bring solace to the loved ones he left behind.
