Architecture faculty, students, and alumni honored by Virginia Society, AIA

The Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects has announced the recipients of its 2011 Awards for Excellence in Architecture, and School of Architecture + Design faculty, students, and alumni are among the honorees.

Faculty members Joseph Wheeler, Robert Schubert, David Clark, and Robert Dunay received an Honor Award for the LumenHAUS, winner of the Solar Decathlon Europe competition.

A 17-member student design team led by faculty members Keith and Marie Zawistowski won a Merit Award for the new Farmers Market in Covington, Va.

Alumnus David Jameson (B.Arch. 1990) of Alexandria, Va., received a merit award for the Kensington Residence in Kensington, MD, and a citation award for Graticule, a residence in Great Falls, VA.

Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company (Jane Cady Wright, B.Arch., 1980, and Nicholas E. Vlattas, B.Arch., 1976) received awards in the Interior Design category for the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA, and in the Historic Preservation category for the Freemason Baptist Church Renovation + Addition in Norfolk, VA.

Alumni Beth Reader (B.Arch. 1986) and Chuck Swartz (B.Arch. 1986) of Reader & Swartz Architects in Winchester, Va., received the Sir John Soane Personality Award for the Loft Upon Cork private residence.
