Urban Design is the thoughtful application of the full range of design disciplines… at a variety of scales… for maximum benefit… to people. It demands the collaborative efforts of a broad range of designers to achieve a solution that is greater than the sum of its parts. Over the past forty years I have participated in the evolution of Portland’s transit system, the mock-up of a jail cell, the creation of zoo habitats, and the wonder of travel from Eastern Oregon to Ephesus to Easter Island. Over half of that tenure has been at ZGF Architects in Portland, where collaborative design is practiced at a high level at every scale. Examples of that work will be the starting point of our conversation.
