The core of our academic program is a sequence of design studios accompanied by seminar, lecture, and experiential coursework that incorporates contemporary and emerging knowledge related to technology, design theory, landscape ecology, and human/environment interaction. The design studios provide a setting for students and faculty to investigate contemporary practices and address critical landscape architectural issues, contexts, and project types.
The program’s curriculum is founded in three overlapping premises:
• Design for Resilience (Geodesign)
• Community Engaged Design
• Design for People and Place
The next generation of landscape architects explore and propel the profession and discipline of landscape architecture as they address critical issues embedded in the built environment’s sticky problems. Design for Resilience addresses disturbances to urban ecosystems, especially those caused by development activities impacting community sustainability and adaptability.
Community Engaged Design practices includes community members in addressing some of the most pressing problems in our contemporary communities, such as food access, water quality, social and environmental justice, and environmental health and well-being.
Design for People and Place integrates culture, human and environmental history, and human and natural systems as students engage in design explorations.
You can begin as early as Fall 2021. Please let us know if you have any questions or topics you would like to discuss. For more information please email Terry Clements, Landscape Architecture Chair.
