Cowgill Lobby: 4th Year Industrial Design Research Findings

Seniors in industrial design will be pinning up their continued research findings in the lobby September 30th from noon till 4:45 PM.

It is an inquiry into our submission to the digital devices and our addiction to the continuous stream of information/misinformation or non-information, that we seek, nonstop. It is part of a six-week-long project. Our attempt is to encourage student interaction with a larger audience.

Here is the project prompt:

I check my phone first thing in the morning and right before I go to bed at night. I feel anxious if my phone’s battery is under 10%. I not only tap away on my phone while in line at the coffee shop, but I may continue tapping away as the barista takes my order. I check my phone during lulls in meetings, even in the middle of my favorite shows.  It’s embarrassing to admit all of this, but I have a feeling that I’m not alone.

The question is, what is it that we are after?
Is it possible to get the information that we want without looking at the phone?

We would like you to investigate the IFTTT ecosystem of apps and applets. It stands for If-This-Then-That.

Imagine working in the studio as part of a team of five and every photo that you take using your smartphones gets saved to a specific folder on Google Drive.
What if a physical object gave you the information about the weather here in Blacksburg so that you can dress appropriately.
What if ……..
