ASLA VT Park(ing) Day: One tiny parklet…

ASLA at Virginia Tech to host annual PARK(ing) Day Friday, October 18th from 7 AM until 8 PM in the Squires parking lot. PARK(ing) Day is a nationwide event that supports the transformation of a metered parking space into a small, temporary “parklette” to encourage critical public thought about the urban landscape.

PARK(ing) Day originated in San Francisco by the art group Rebar in 2005 and expands worldwide annually. Parks pop up for hours at a time to provide anything: a beach-themed getaway to a land art-inspired installation, for the purpose of showing how even temporary outdoor green spaces can change the character of a city. The ASLA celebrated this day nationally on Friday, September 20th, and MURP students celebrated by transforming spaces in Crystal City, Arlington. Blacksburg campus students were at the annual VA ASLA conference in Virginia Beach, and will be using the October event to remind Blacksburg that urban green space can be celebrated any day of the year.
